The International Association of Bioethics aims to be truly international, linking all those working in bioethics and related fields, facilitating mutual contact, and encouraging the discussion of cross-cultural aspects in bioethics.

The IAB Service to Others Award recognizes individuals who have made exemplary contributions to international bioethics through their impact on society, based on activism or service (beyond scholarship), despite challenges and obstacles, or under unfavorable circumstances. 

The award is meant to recognize local, national and/or international efforts, sustained over a period of time, that reflect bioethics values in action. Possible nominees include, for example, those who have worked significantly in the service of others, by advancing the interests of vulnerable people or building capacity for bioethics in regions with particular needs; or those who contributed to ethical reflection and responsible conduct or enhanced equitable provision of healthcare services, at a clinical or public health level.

The IAB Service to Others Award is accompanied by a Certificate of Recognition and a US$500 monetary award. 

Individuals who meet the above criteria are eligible. Self-nominations are welcome. All nominations will be evaluated by the IAB Board of Directors solely based on the significance of the candidate’s contributions. Nominees need not be IAB members. They can be at any stage of their career and need not be affiliated with a university or academic institution.

To submit a nomination, please complete the nomination template and submit it by email to the International Association of Bioethics at:, by April, 2020.  The recipient of the award will be announced at the June 2020 World Congress of Bioethics and featured on the IAB website, monthly bulletin and social media platforms.

The call for nominations is also available in Arabic, German, Japanese, Spanish and French. Please take note that all nominations must be submitted in English.

Individual IAB Membership

Individuals wishing to become IAB members must purchase their membership through registering to the 15th World Congress of Bioethics.

IAB membership benefits includes:

  • The right to register to the Word Congress of Bioethics (WCB)
  • For Early Career Researchers – the right to apply for a travel bursary to the WCB
